It's a common dental procedure that many people experience at some point in their lives. But what exactly is a root canal, and who performs it? That's where endodontists come in.

Endodontists are dental specialists who focus on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth. This includes the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that extend from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root.

So, what does an endodontist treat?

•  Root canals: This is the most common procedure performed by endodontists. It involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp from the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root canal, and then filling and sealing it. This helps to save the tooth and prevent further infection.
•  Retreatment: Sometimes, a root canal may need to be retreated if the infection returns or if the original treatment wasn't successful.
•  Endodontic surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to access the root canal or to remove infected tissue.
•  Traumatic dental injuries: Endodontists can also treat injuries to the teeth, such as cracked or broken teeth.
•  Apexification and apexogenesis: These are procedures that can help to promote the development of the root of a tooth that has not fully formed.

Not all dental problems require endodontic treatment. However, if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is important to see a dentist or endodontist for an evaluation:

•  Severe toothache, especially when biting or chewing
•  Sensitivity to hot or cold
•  Swelling or tenderness in the gums
•  A loose or discolored tooth
•  Pus draining from the tooth

Endodontists are experts in saving teeth. They have the specialized training and skills necessary to diagnose and treat even the most complex dental problems. If you are concerned about the health of your teeth, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with an endodontist. They can help you keep your smile healthy for years to come.
